CAW boss says $1 billion federal aid package for manufacturers not significant

The president of the Canadian Auto Workers union says a $1-billion aid package to help communities and laid-off workers is ``not significant.''

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the national community development trust in New Brunswick today.

CAW boss Buzz Hargrove says Ontario's $350-million share won't be enough to help manufacturers cope with a high dollar, record energy prices and a slumping U.S. economy.

Hargrove says the problems are much bigger than Harper seems to realize and require a greater response from Ottawa.

The Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association says the federal government should match Ontario's loan program for manufacturers.

The association, the CAW and the heads of most major automakers met with Premier Dalton McGuinty today, asking him to lobby Harper for more help at Friday's first ministers' meeting.
